GUIDE TO ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION
Success depends largely on mare having been swabbed clear, insemination performed as close to ovulation as possible; i.e. not more than 24 hour before ovulation. Similar to that of a successful natural cover, AND the cycle followed through until the mare goes into season

OWNER
1. Try to let the stud know in advance that semen may be needed shortly.
2. When you receive the container DO NOT OPEN IT until your vet is ready to inseminate the mare.
3. Prepare the mare, a/ by putting on a clean tail bandage.
b. wash mare's vulva with clean warm water, using cotton wool. DO NOT use any disinfection, then dry with paper towel.
c. restrain mare, if necessary, to aid your vet.
4. The mare should be inseminated as soon as possible. She provides the best environment for the semen and is the best warmer. Don't save any semen for another dose as it will deteriorate in the container. If ovulation is delayed it is better to order another insemination (subject to your vets advice)

VET
5. To inseminate the chilled or fresh semen;
a. Note the particulars of the mare to verify identification for signing document.
b. Set up all items needed for insemination such as sterile pipette, sterile syringe. gloves, and sleeves. remember that many types of syringes and pipettes may have a toxic effect, a plastic syringe, without a rubber plunger is advisable, as rubber is also spermicidal. If you are unsure of the equipment, leave the semen in contact with it for as short a time as possible.
c. open container, DO NOT WARM THE SEMEN, carefully turn the bag/file of semen to mix, before filling the syringe which should be done slowly
d. Try and use K-Y jelly ONLY for lubrication of glove.
e. Lastly sign the A.I. cert of service which is supplied with the container, for the owner to return to the stud for registration.

OWNER
6. Return semen box straight away, The next mare owner is waiting for it! by normal post is fine @ approx £3.50

N.B. To inseminate using frozen semen; The procedure to follow in preparing the insemination, will come with the container to a specialised veterinary clinic.
